Knit vs. Crochet

The ongoing drama(?) of a girl torn between two obsessions with too little time.

Kitten Poncho

So you know that baby short round poncho I made?
My amazingly smart boyfriend pointed out that the head was far too small for a baby's large, soft, fragile head to be squished through.
So it became a cat poncho.
Ain't I a stinker?

Smiley's Hotel Sale!

I stopped by the Smiley's yarn Hotel Sale this afternoon after work with a friend and her friend and her friend.
Oh. my. word.
There was a line out the door, there were people lined around the ballroom for the cash register, and there were some attitudes going strong from people back further in line (they closed the line after a certain point...or tried to...after a while they just gave up and let everyone swarm in. hehe)
I was very very good and restrained myself (also only had a certain amount of cash on me--intentionally!) to some Red Heart "With Wool", Bernat Handicrafter, Paton Cotton, and Bernat Breeze--and two sets of straight needles and some sort of loop embroidery tool that was only $1. Oh, and a bag of 50% mohair that we're splitting up.
Really, I was VERY good (read: half the stuff in my basket left when we got near the registers) and it only took us 2 hours to get through the lines.

Rib and Cable Mittens - Done!

I really like this mitten pattern. I definitely made the wrists too long, and perhaps some blocking will compensate for the curl at the cable edge. I knit these while waiting during my first round of med school interviews and I think they'll go to my mom. I started on another pair in preparation for (hopefully) another round of interviews--they're the perfect take-along project.
In addition, I finished another alternating windowpanes scarf :)

WIP - Baby Short Round Poncho

from CROCHET bythehook

Yarn: Lion Brand Jamie in Happy Print
Hook: K (whee!)
Don't ask me how, but I now have 30 skeins of this yarn. What else am I going to make with 45 ounces of this other than lots of baby accessories?! Yay! The colors are a bit brighter (and more in-focus) than the above photo might indicate. This pattern is perfect--easy but not as boring as say, 20 rounds of dc. I think I might finish it off with a little I-cord bow with pom-pom ends, made with my new notions!

WIP - Baby Cable Cap

Another project I briefly mentioned, here's the latest picture--unfortunately it's a black hat and so it's rather difficult to photograph it indoors at night--you'll have to just take my word for it that it is not in fact a hideous asphalt-coloured blob and actually will be quite a nice and warm knit hat for, say, one's father.

WIP - Rib and Cable Mittens

You might recall my posting oh-so-many ages about some mittens I was making--here's what they look like now (compare with then) . These mittens have been put on the back burner for a while, actually, I don't know why--towards the end of a project sometimes I forget about it in the excitement of starting new projects (yikes.)

Score!

Again, this weekend I went to Jersey and made runs at Wal-mart and Michael's. I know, I know, I should really stop shopping at a place that is such a terrible corporate citizen, but...
I got needles, crochet hooks, and yarn for co-workers I am inducting into the world of knitting and crocheting.
For myself, I finally gave in and bought a knitting spool for I-cords, cable needles (my boy had made me a really lovely brass one, but it's a size 11 or so) and a set of pom-pom makers. (Dude, I'm tired of cutting out cardboard circles!)
I also picked up two cro-hooks, one of which has a flexible cord in the middle to make for easy long projects. I'm trying to resist starting a cro-hook afghan, it seems like such an exciting new technique for me to learn! (My life is so sad.)
Also they had frilly novelty yarn (Bernat Boa and Paton Twister) on sale so I was forced to purchase 4 balls.
I was somewhat unpleasantly surprised at my total at the cashier. Oops!

Freedom

I'll still be able to knit and crochet, but what else good is in America's future for a lower-income minority non-churchgoing woman scientist?
